Prognosis and response to treatment
Prognosis
Prognosis describes the likely outcome of an illness. Healthcare professionals use prognosis to help guide treatment decisions.
In small cell lung cancer (SCLC), prognosis is influenced by several factors, including:
- A person’s general health and fitness.
- How far the cancer has spread at the time of diagnosis (the stage, e.g. limited or extensive).
- How well the cancer responds to treatment.
Response to treatment
Healthcare teams monitor how treatment is affecting both the cancer and the person receiving it. This is usually done using imaging scans and blood tests, during regular check-ups.
SCLC often responds well to initial treatment. This may result in:
- Partial response – the cancer becomes smaller.
- Stable disease – the cancer is not growing.
These outcomes show that treatment is helping to control the cancer.
Sometimes scans show no visible signs of cancer. This is called a complete response, although sometimes the cancer can still return.
If the cancer continues to grow despite treatment, this is known as disease progression or progressive disease.
When the cancer is responding to treatment for a prolonged time, it may be described as being in remission. At that point, the treatment may either be continued or stopped. People who achieve remission after initial treatment generally have a better overall outlook.
If the cancer returns after a period of response, further treatment options may be available, depending on previous treatments and overall health.
